How to Make Leyla’s Smiley Snake

– video tutorial appears after text at the bottom of the page –

I’m excited to share with you this origami creation – a playful smiley snake design crafted to welcome the upcoming Year of the Snake in 2025!

I’ve developed two slightly different versions of this cheerful serpent, with the photo showing it in various colors to spark your imagination. My goal was to capture the playful spirit of origami while reimagining snakes as endearing creatures with their heart-shaped faces and upturned tails.

Why fold just one? Create your delightful group of serpentine friends in your favorite colors! Whether you arrange them dancing together or having a friendly chat, each snake brings its own personality while celebrating the lunar new year.

I can’t wait to see your rainbow of reptilian companions! Share your creations and let’s fill 2025 with paper snakes that make everyone smile. 🐍

Tips and suggestions for making the origami Ribbon Gift Box

  • Folding this model is relatively easy. If you are at the Apprentice Bee Stage (Stage 1) or Emergent Frog Stage (Stage 2) make sure you have taken the Origami Basics Minicourse
  • One square of kami paper (6 x 6 inches or 15 x 15 cm) Larger paper is preferable for the first time. Color on one side White on the other (Contrasting colors best). We see both sides of the paper.
  • Pointy Tool.
  • Tweezers are helpful.

In this video you will see two ways to fold this snake: a streamlined version that’s great for building your origami skills, and a slightly more detailed version that adds height to the final design.

You can fold two, side by side and complete two versions. Or you can chose to finish the simpler one only.
